Forensic Image Analysis Toolkit (FIAT)

The Forensic Image Analysis Toolkit (FIAT) was developed to assist with the preparation and analysis of digital forensic imaging evidence for the use of police and security forces worldwide. The toolkit currently includes the automated scaling of forensic images by detecting and analyzing rulers within the image, automated contrast adjustment to enhance fingerprints and automated dewarping of images. More automated functions are under development in response to feedback from end users. The toolkit is available as a dynamic link library for Microsoft® Windows NT/98/ME/2000/XP/Vista/Seven that is easily integrated into existing customer software. It is compatible with virtually all operating systems and can be embedded on various platforms as well.

AUTO CONTRAST FUNCTION - An Auto Contrast tool would automatically adjust the contrast of a region of interest (e.g. of a fingerprint) by analyzing the information in the region and adjusting the output to maximize the information available for display.

AUTOMATED RULER DETECTION FUNCTION - Photos of fingerprints must have a scale or ruler placed in the field of view; an automated ruler detection and scale extraction tool would greatly reduce the time necessary to determine the scale and then print a 1:1 photo of the mark.

IMAGE DEWARPING - Photos of fingerprints taken at crime scenes are generally taken such that the camera is perpendicular to the surface of interest, however when this is not possible, a tool can be developed to automatically adjust the image (called dewarping) to achieve a perpendicular perspective.
